Why work for First African?

Working for a top company

First African Holdings is one of the largest signage- and cladding companies in Africa. Not only do we have competent, respected and highly qualified staff, but the well-known brands that put their trust in us, as their preferred supplier, speaks for itself. Our company motto – Showing the Way – underpins many of our business decisions from our approach to quality to the way in which we achieve an inclusive working environment for our staff. Take a look at our projects , which includes many well-known brands.

Best Company to Work For

We recently took part in the Deloitte Best Company to Work For (companies voted in by employees) survey. The BCTWF survey, which is now an institution in South Africa, has been running for 14 years. Every year it names the top ranked employers to work for. This was the first time First African Holdings entered and we are proud to be ranked 4th best company to work for in the Manufacturing Industry category for South African-based companies. FAH entered this survey, to create a better workplace for their employees. Management needed to know what motivates their employees and how aligned they are with their employees’ values and needs.

Management evaluated the feedback received and took measures to create an even better workplace. One of the tools that were implemented, Quality Circles, empower employees to come forward with better solutions to work-related problems that they experience and to present their well researched solutions to management for approval and implementation.

Aligned Management/Employee Values

Traditionally company top management strategically determines the values of the company and filters it through to employees.

At FAH a list of values are put together and the employees then vote to determine the Top 5 values. Our values are:

  1. Respect
  2. Trust
  3. Honesty
  4. Communication
  5. Commitment

Impressive Facility with Modern Technology

Our 4 000 square meters facility, modern technology and well-planned layout will not fail to impress you. Our facilities, machines, equipment and staff are well positioned to accommodate effective flow in the manufacturing process.

Personal Development/Education opportunities

When an employee is serious about their future at FAH, there are many opportunities for them.

Our Operations Manager, Christian Walser, is one example. He started off his career working for Gossamer Structures and Kretchmer Engineering as Technician from 1999 – 2000, with a CPUT Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. At the end of 2000, he joined FAH as a Draughtsman and within 6 months he was promoted to Procurement Manager. It was at this time that he studied part time and received a Certificate in Management Development and also a Certificate in Project Management. After 3 years Christian was promoted to Senior Project Manager and after 6 more years of valuable experience, he was ready to fulfill his new role as Production Manager at the end of 2010. After 2 years in this position Christian was offered the position of Operations Manager. In 2013 he did a course in Finance for Non-Financial Managers. Because Christian proofed that he was serious about his future at FAH, FAH has given him lots of opportunities for personal development and further studies. In 2013 he did a course in Finance for Non-Financial Managers. Today Christian is one of our Top Management members.

When we did our corporate video, employees were informally interviewed about what it is like, working for FAH.

Sharing in company profits

Back in 2003, First African Holdings (FAH) concluded a BBBEE transaction that saw previously disadvantaged staff take up a 40% stake in the company. We thought this would be a good strategy to look after our employees.

Employees working at FAH therefore receive shares in the company, which they can then sell when they retire. You can read more here about how Daphne Joubert and Naties Jacobs recently received generous cheques by selling their shares when they retired.

Involvement in Social Development

It is well-known that it is beneficial for companies to be involved in Social Development for BEEE purposes. At FAH we do not only hand over money to organizations, but employees enjoy getting involved in the events. FAH are involved in many fundraising events that range from offering creative activities to Cotlands children, manning a spinning bike for 24 hours to raise funds for PATCH, to packing and donating 4320 meals in the Stop Hunger Now project and offering life-changing opportunities in the Pebbles Project.

Social - & Teambuilding Events…& Great coffee

At FAH we regularly have social - & teambuilding events. From the informal Friday boerewors rolls to themed End-of-Year parties to our very stylish 15 year anniversary event at Lord Charles, employees get spoilt quite so often.

The great coffee aroma when entering FAH in the morning, is a definite PLUS and well appreciated by all staff…60 000+ cups later!
